Massachusetts is full of hidden natural treasures, including epic waterfalls in the most unexpected places. While we might not have a cascade as fierce as Niagara Falls, we do have a superbly beautiful waterfall that will inspire you with just as much awe. Better yet, the hike to this waterfall is easy but the payoff is huge. You’re going to love visiting the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts.
Bash Bish Falls is the tallest waterfall in Massachusetts.
Google/Niranj Chandrasekaran It’s tucked away on Mount Washington in Berkshire County. Fed by Bash Bish Brook, which also flows through New York, the waterfall is one of the most stunning natural features in the state.
Though it may not be as tall or powerful as Niagara Falls, Bash Bish Falls is totally enchanting.
Flickr/James Walsh The waterfall is situated at the mouth of a gorge formed during the last ice age and its waters flow over a sheer rock face in a distinctive “V” shape.
These waters cascade almost 200 feet into a crystal-clear pool at the waterfall’s base.
Google/Clay Selleck Depending on the season and recent weather conditions, the flow of the falls ranges between a sweet, tinkling stream to a roaring surge. Bring the kiddos and experience the beauty first-hand! This is one of the best family-friendly attractions in Massachusetts.
Though taking a dip in the glittering waters of the waterfall’s pool is definitely tempting, swimming isn’t permitted here.
Google/Clay Selleck In fact, it can prove highly dangerous. More than 25 deaths have occurred at the falls. Though technically most of these have been due to rock climbing or reckless jumping into the shallow water, it’s still not a good idea to wade near the cascades.
Bash Bish Falls is a true Bay State gem that too few people know about.
Google/Johnny Miller There are two access points for viewing the waterfall, and you can reach the cascade via a two-mile out and back trail. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on leash. If you want the best chance to have the falls to yourself, try to visit in the early summer or fall. The falls frozen over in the winter are also magnificent.
