While I’d absolutely love it if all I had to share was good news and incredible destinations in New Jersey, it’s also important to be aware of what’s going on right now in the Garden State. We’re still in the midst of an active shooter situation in Jersey City, following a police shootout with armed suspects. Area residents and employees are still on lockdown, and the details are consistently evolving. Here’s what we know so far.

The shootout took place in the area of Bidwell Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, just blocks from New Jersey City University.

The shooting started when a police officer investigating a murder approached two suspects. One opened fire on the officer, shooting him in the head and killing him. According to officials, the officer was 39 years old and a father of 5.

The suspects then fled in a rental van and holed up inside a grocery store. It’s been reported that the suspects and three civilians were killed in a gun battle inside that grocery store.

A SWAT team has been called in and schools in both Jersey City and Bayonne were on lockdown. Police are working to clear the streets.

Several people were also wounded. First responders and Hatzalah paramedics, who serve the orthodox Jewish community, rushed to the scene.
