A Polar Coaster Winter Could Be Headed For New Hampshire This Year

New Hampshirites are no stranger to frighteningly dramatic winter weather. After all, we do have the mountain where the coldest temps on record have been recorded. Most winters here bring snow, rain, ice and chilly temps and some of us have come to appreciate that. It means lots of fun outdoor winter activities. But despite knowing what to expect, we always enjoy waiting for the Farmers’ Almanac to release their forecast and this year, it’s a doozy. Get ready for a wild ride!

In New Hampshire, we’re used to winters that feel cold and warm days are a bit of a treat. But this year’s winter is expected to bring it all. Known as the “polar coaster” winter, this season might be like nothing we’ve ever seen.

The Farmers’ Almanac editor, Peter Geiger says “This winter is going to be full of thrills and chills.” He goes on to say, “it’s going to be a long ride on the Polar Coaster.”

So what exactly does that mean for us this winter?

We’ll have easy days when going outside and appreciating some warmer temps will be possible.

But overall we’ll experience colder than normal temperatures. The winter will also see significant precipitation.

Early January has been flagged as bringing lots of snow, while later January will be marked by temperatures dipping far below zero in the northeast. And that’s going to last into February.

Unfortunately, the Almanac is telling us that this back-and-forth weather will go on into April so it’s going to be a wild ride. Just like the “polar coaster” name indicates.
