Here in Maine lobster is a key part of life. Whether you’re eating it, talking about it or even heading out to haul up those pots, you just can’t escape lobster in Vacationland. And we’re okay with that! While we’re perfectly happy with the brown ones that turn red when you cook ’em, we really loved this recent news story!

There’s nothing quite so lovely as the quintessential image of a lobster fishing boat in calm waters.

And Maine produces the most lobster of any state in the US. Last year alone, the state saw almost 120 million pounds of lobster pulled from the sea! And since 2011 the annual amount has been more than 100 million pounds. That’s a lot of lobster!

On December 8th a fisherman in Ellsworth hauled up not one, not two, but three rare lobster! Pictured here are the blue, calico and orange lobsters that somehow ended up on the same day.

The University of Maine Lobster Institute estimates that catching a blue lobster is 1 in 200 million.

And the likelihood of a lobster being orange is about 1 in 30 million. Now imagine what the stats would be on getting three!
