Did you know that Iowa is one of the top places in the nation to spot bald eagles? Year after year, people gather along the river to watch these impressive birds of prey hunt, fish, and build their nests. One community on the water celebrates with an annual festival dedicated to our national mascot. This year, the Clinton Bald Eagle Watch will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Every winter, majestic Bald Eagles soar through the skies above the Mississippi River, drawing hundreds of birdwatchers to the Iowa shoreline.

Clinton’s aptly named Eagle Point Park, near Lock and Dam 13, is one of the most popular places for spotting these beautiful birds. For the 36th year, the town of Clinton will gather here to celebrate their annual Eagle Watch Day Festival.

The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem and mascot of the United States of America since 1782 when Secretary of Congress Charles Thomson chose the bird for the seal of the new country.

By 1976, bald eagles were considered an endangered species. Thanks to conservation efforts, the birds have made a remarkable comeback, and now spotting them along the river is a winter tradition in the Midwest.

Eagles choose to nest near the Mississippi River because it provides a food source and plenty of tree cover for shelter. Photographers love to catch these birds mid-flight, or as they dive to catch fish from the water.

During the Clinton Eagle Watch, you’ll be able to spot dozens of these beautiful birds, as long as you bring your binoculars!

In between birdwatching on the river, head to Clinton Community College, where there will be demonstrations with real birds of prey, as well as door prizes, educational exhibits, and refreshments.
